This Monday, our resource is Simon Sinek's, "The Science of Why". Steven Covey gained popularity when his message to "Begin with the end in mind" was transforming lives by the thousands. It is one of the solid tenants in coaching. Then Simon Sinek comes along and says start with "why". Is this the same thing? Different? Let's explore! Let's say you have a math formula. But this formula isn't complete. For example, can you tell me what the solution to this formula is? 4 + + 8 = No, we are missing information. Just like in algebra, you need to define certain qualities to solve the equation. For example, now can you solve it? 4 + + 8 = 22 Yes, now we can solve the problem! This is the power of beginning with end in mind. You get to choose the desired outcome. Once you do so, the other pieces of the equation fall into place... naturally. Or, if I chose 33 instead of 22, then the other numbers would adjust accordingly. What about "start with why?" Beginning with the end in mind is defining what outcome is most desirable. Why it is the chosen outcome is the container that holds the goal in place. This is the power of reverse engineering. The formula: 1) begin with the end in mind, 2) figure out why it was the chosen goal, 3 after both are established and you are ready to move towards your goal, then 4) start with why and move forward.
