Supervision vs. Mentoring

Q: "What is the difference between a mentor coach and a coaching supervisor?"

My original mentor coach for my PCC became a trained Coaching Supervisor. She explains the distinctions very clearly.

Mentor coaching is only specific to honing, developing and identifying your coaching specific skills. Mentoring supports our "in-session" skills.

Coaching supervision is everything else, beyond a session, that goes into supporting our success as a coach. This may include issues around where our ethical boundaries are drawn, our coaching presence in general, our overall coaching style or philosophy, our coaching approach and our overall coaching success formula.

In Supervision I can run scenarios, stuck points and struggles by my Supervisor for coaching. In mentor coaching I will submit a recording of a session, the mentor would review my competency level and give me developmental feedback on my coaching skills.

In our certification program, we provide both to each student both.

New Community of Practice:
Coaching Supervision

From the ICF:
"Coaching Supervision is a collaborative learning practice to continually build the capacity of the coach through reflective dialogue for the benefit of both coaches and clients. We recognize Coaching Supervision as an important element of a coach’s professional development, and we are proud to announce the launch of the Coaching Supervision Community of Practice. This community will explore the importance of reflective practice through interactive webinars, subject matter expert presentations and community discussions. To receive emails about upcoming webinars, please join the contact list."

3 Simple Ways to set Realistic Goals and Keep Them

"The life of an entrepreneur is a hectic one. We are typically inundated with to-do lists and responsibilities, juggling business, personal, and professional relationships, and trying to do far more in a day than is typically realistic. We don't often have the time to sit by ourselves and focus on our own thoughts or map out our goals in a very strategic way.

"But most entrepreneurs and executives I know try to take some time at the start of every new year to reflect on where they are and wherever it is they want to move next. They see the holidays in December and the month of January as a time to reset, and to think clearly about what is going to drive the most impact for themselves and their businesses over the next 12 months. They then create a pragmatic and tactical action plan for themselves to turn their goals into reality."

Lost in Translation

Trick question. Does the sun rise or set each day?

According to our phenomenological centric language, yes.

Yet, in reality, the sun stays still while the earth turns around it.

In life, when a phenomenon happens our brain is wired to then interpret it. It is a "threat" or is it "friendly"? This interpretation of "its ok" or "it is a threat" forms a relationship to the phenomenon.

Yet, sometimes our interpretations can be inaccurate. Or, if we move too quickly to the "threat" box, we can lose sight of other aspects available to us that are lost in our interpretation.

Human beings have capacity to:
  1. See the phenomenon for what it is, without judgement.
  2. See the negative aspects, perceived or real.
  3. See the positive aspects and search for the opportunities.
  4. See a combination of any or all of the above.
This weeks resource is about the power and comforting aspects of mindfulness.

Mindfulness is a practice of calming the mind that allows us to see more clearly and gain access all aspects.

The Course in Miracles teaches that we can use anything for a greater good, no matter how horrible something is/was. Even in devastation, the human spirit can rise above and locate the opportunities to turn things around.

We saw this at 9/11. Families and communities didn't go isolate in fear, they came together and connected and supported each other. They took the opportunities out of the devastation.

We are seeing this now with Covid. Humanity pivoted.

I saw a video of families quarantined in a rustic city of Italy. They were isolated, lonely, scared and hurting. They took the opportunity, opened their windows and sang together during a very lonely and scary time. This brought them peace and connection during a very tumultuous time.

This is the beauty of our humanity, we have choice.
