Genius Zone

Apparently we all have a Zone of Genius.  It is the space where our genius comes alive.  You could say it is where your life purpose shines through.  It is where you are in harmony with your innate potential.

Last article we looked at how we can harbor an internal setting that keeps us limited.  Today we will look at one powerful leap towards raising the bar.

In Hendricks's book the Big Leap he identifies four zones we can operate through:
  1. Zone of Incompetence:  We don't know, or are not good at something.
  2. Zone of Competence:  We are good at something.
  3. Zone of Excellence:  We are really really good at something.
  4. Zone of Genius:  We shine effortlessly and inspire others with our work.
Here is the kicker.  The first three zones keep us at a lower internal thermostat.  To raise an internal success setting, we must spend more time in our Genius.  We must start saying no to that which doesn't not stem from, or support, our Genius work.

This can be really hard if you are floating happily in Excellence land.  It feels good to stay there because you get recognition easily and people love that you are excellent at what you do.  Same with Competence land.

Decades ago I had quit an administrative job as a Registrar and Admissions Director.  It was where I excelled and I was asked to come back on multiple occasions.  It was so tempting, yet I knew it was not my genius work.  Coaching was my genius work.  Taking abstract concepts and breaking them down into small easy to digest strategies was my genius work.  I'm so grateful I said no, or I wouldn't be bringing you fun and empowering resources each week.  So much more fun than crushing data points!

So, I'll ask you.  Do you know what your Genius work is?  Are you living there now?  How often do you visit your Genius and allow it to bring you towards new important areas in your life?

Internal Thermostat

Happy Monday!  Hope you had a restorative weekend.

Did you know that a goldfish will grow to match the size of its surroundings?  Fascinating.  If a goldfish is kept in a small bowl, it stays small.  If it is transferred into a larger tank, it grows larger.

I find this to be a powerful metaphor for coaching.  As we help our clients see farther, think broader, their capacity expands.

The next few weeks I'll be doing a review of some of the key capacity expanding concepts outlined in The Big Leap, by Gay Hendricks.

In Hendricks's book he brings up the concept of an internal thermostat.

He outlines that there is an internal setting we all have that kicks in when we've reached the "upper limit" of being comfortable with success.  He says we all have a setting and most of us are unconscious about what our setting is.

The first thing to look at is your core fear and success.  Not failure.  Success.

He outlines the most common and calls these our "barriers".
  1. I am flawed and don't deserve success.
  2. Success is a burden.
  3. If I succeed I'll leave the people I love behind.
  4. I feel guilty to have success when others are suffering.
First, identify which of these may be active for you.

Next, identify what behaviors indicate the fear has taken the driver's wheel.  For example, do you worry, punish yourself or those around you, get sick or hurt, or deflect?

Last, when we catch the behavior we can flip the script.  So, when I catch myself worrying I realize that my fear of being flawed has taken over and I can remind myself... "Welp.  We are all flawed.  And that is beautiful."

Your turn!

Which fear do you most harbor around success from the list above?  What is the truth on the other side of the fear?  Is success really a burden?  No, you can handle it.  Will you really leave behind people you love?  Not if you don't want to and by stepping into your potential you invite others to step into theirs.  Etc.

What behavior patterns do you succumb to when the fear of success shows up?

What script will you choose when these show up?

What does your life feel like without the fear?

Einstein Time

In The Big Leap, Hendricks brings up a concept that is mind blowing.  I honestly would have felt it was a bunch of woo-woo if I hadn't experienced first hand many years ago.  This one shift took me from feelings of overwhelm, dread and exhaustion and pivoted me into a world of expansive ease.  I began to surprise myself and others with how much I was getting done with ease.

Hendricks calls this Einstein Time.  He points out that in Newtonian time we view time as finite and limited.  This is a very logical conclusion, after all if you look at a clock ticking you can see each second, minute and hour ticking away.   You can count there are 24 of these things we call hours in a day and 60 of these things we call seconds in a minute.  Etc. etc.

So then what is Einstein's time?

Here is where it gets fun!

Einstein saw a relationship between space and time.  Hendricks connected the dots and posits that we do indeed impact how spacious or limited time becomes based on how we relate to time. Sounds kinda crazy right!?  Yet, we have all experienced this to one degree or another.

For example, if you are in a hurry to get somewhere and operating under Newtonian thinking "I'm going to be late, there is no way to get there." this creates stress.  The focus on stress actually condenses time around us making it like molasses to move through.

Oh it get's better...

On this inverse, when we feel we have plenty of time, and really feel that spaciousness, we magically find that the time we need is there.  Coaches experience this all the time in session.

After reading this idea I had a realization.  Like any good coach, years ago, I decided to do three things with my time.  Remember I was overwhelmed and dreading my to-do lists (yes, I had about 4 of those).  I decided to take action.  I agreed to:

1) Begin with the end in mind.  Plan my week.
2) Prioritize my day.

I noticed that doing #1 and #2 helped immensely.  I became very efficient and aligned with my values.  Yet, it didn't take care of the stress of meeting and surpassing deadlines.  I was still experiencing dread, overwhelm and exhaustion.  So, I decided to believe there was plenty of time.  I added:

3) Believe I had more than enough time, even when it didn't appear that way logically.  Exhale with relief.

When the dread crept up, I had a mantra I adopted, "All in a days work, this shall be done."  I would exhale and expand into the realm of all the time I needed.  I was absolutely amazed how much I could magically accomplish when I sank into the spaciousness of time.

It was almost like stress was the gravity pulling time in closer to me, condensing it into almost nothing, and that my expansive mindset allowed space and time to just exist.

I completely understand that everything I'm saying defies conventional logic and time management advice!  Yet, looking back, this was the moment that shifted my life into greater ease.

It was the moment I let go of linear stressful thinking and allowed ease to sink in that my experience of life shifted. It appeared to me as if all this extra time was quietly waiting, here all along to be tapped into as soon as I became ready to embrace it.  There is plenty of time, in this moment... there is plenty.  And so it is.

The Course in Miracles says it is not our task to seek for love, but simply to remove the barriers to love, because it already exists, waiting for us.  So it is with our own success...

Enjoy your week experimenting with Einstein Time!
