The Super Power Within You

2/8/2021

Comments

In challenging times many times the first thing to go is patience. As stress levels are higher than average during Covid, politics, and social distancing, there is a simple solution we can apply that helps us rise above.

This is self-talk. Self-talk can make or break your day, your timing, your activity levels and beyond. Today is a reminder that we have choice and we can engage a more compassionate voice.

As we are compassionate with ourselves, the compassion for others becomes more accessible.

Enjoy!
Self Compassion

Coaching Article of the Week:
Be Kinder to Yourself
by Alice Boyes, Harvard Business Review

"Talking to yourself with self-compassion will help you deal with a raft of challenging situations, including those you experience personally and those you need to help your employees or kids through. To use it effectively, follow these practices to build specific, personalized habits of self-compassionate talk: give yourself a gentle and supportive nudge by asking yourself what you need in the moment; use irreverence to challenge your beliefs; reframe a trait or tendency to take a more balanced view; identify your patterns of self-sabotage; borrow language from friends, quotes, or proverbs; and write scripts for common scenarios."

Climb On

Coaching Article of the Week:
Climb On!
by Laurel Elders

Picture
At the age of 7, I recall moments running through the hay fields behind our cabin. I had to run as
fast as I could because the hay was as tall as I was, and grasshoppers would jump on you if you
went to slow.

My goal? To go climb the apple trees just a few acres back.

Fast forward to my teens. My friend took me to Mount Lemmon. We set up all the gear and
then before you know it I was scaling a rock wall 50 feet high. This was a thing?! I can climb
rocks?! My heart was on fire. I loved it!

Fast forward to my twenties. I now had three kidos. My climbing was done at parks and jungle
gyms. None of the other moms climbed. Then an acquaintance of mine happened to get into
climbing. I was ecstatic! I took her out. She eventually got her own gear. It was a blast! We went
outdoor climbing once a month or so. The only problem? She lived down the street from a
climbing gym. Guess who could out-climb me within 2 months?

I was honestly devastated. Happy for her, but personally devastated. Why was something I was
so passionate about so out of reach? I tagged along here and there but really couldn’t keep up. I
tried to not care, pat myself on the back for what I could do and put on a happy face. Yet, when
I looked up at climbs I ached to accomplish, I’m not going to lie. My heart sank.

Fast forward to my forties. In the climbing world there is a grading system. A 5.5 is like climbing
a ladder, easy peasy. A 5.8 is where it starts getting technically challenging and 5.10+ is where
the really good climbers hang out. I am now 44 years old. I have never been able to lead anything
above a 5.7. I can climb 5.9 but it is quite the challenge.

I used to be embarrassed I wasn’t farther along in my progress. I’ve been bouldering around since my youth and with gear for 28 years. Then it hit me. One day I realized, “So what.”

Do I have a blast when I get to go out? Heck ya!

Do I feel fulfilled after a day that kicks my ass? Absolutely!

Do I feel empowered by finding a way up a new challenge? To my core!

So… so what if I’m not a 5.10 climber and probably never will be. While climbing was my
passion, it was not my priority. My kids, my life, my career all came first. Quite frankly, I’m not
even that good at climbing. Climbing never came naturally to me. I always scratched my head at
why God gave me such a passion to climb without the gifts for it. Regardless, I will always love
it. Climbing is in my blood, for whatever reason.

I now help people climb new heights in their personal and professional life as a coach. I guess in
those regards I am a 5.10+ climber, just not in the ways I ever imagined as the little girl running
through the hay fields, escaping grasshoppers, so I could climb as far as I could up the apple
trees.

Is there an area of your life you are holding yourself to an unrealistic standard? An area that
could use a nice dose of “So what. Life is beautiful as it is.” If yes, I invite you to join me in the
gratitude for what is.

Networking: Fun or Frightening?

1/25/2021

I remember showing up at my first networking event nervous to my core. Not only am I an introvert, I never thrive off of groups and grew up very socially awkward. After many forced meetings, I finally decided to find a different way to reach new clients. I decided writing and creating videos were a lot more supportive for me.

Meanwhile my colleague started her coaching practice in under a year by showing up to weekly group meetings. Go figure!

In coaching, we understand that everyone has their own unique success formula in life! Once I let go of the way I "should" grow, I could embrace what worked better... for my formula.

Locating what is going to work best for you is key. Joining programs that understand how to adapt to your unique needs and strengths is what creates the most profound results. Giving ourselves grace when other people's success formulas fall short for us, is freeing.

Today's resource is about finding what kind of networker you are.

Stuck in a Career Rut

How are you enjoying the work you do in the world? Is it fulfilling? Rewarding? Lucrative? Engaging? Life Enhancing?

One of the aspects I love about being a professional coach is that my job gets to be all of those things. I have come to believe that people feel unfulfilled when a direction is calling them and they ignore the calling.

We may be "good" at what we do, but are we fulfilled? This is the focus of today.
What is calling to you this year? Why wait? If it is coaching, let us know. We are here helping professionals fulfill their calling and lead with meaning, enhance their natural gifts and get paid helping empower others.

I invite you to align with your purpose in 2021!

"It happens to all of us. Your job feels like a scene out of the movie, Groundhog Day, where you relive the same mind-numbing events over and over. While every career has peaks and valleys, being stuck in a career rut is different. Check out these warning signs so that you can recognize the red flags and end the grind once and for all."

Coaching Resource of the Week:
The 21 Skills of Spiritual Intelligence
by Simon Blackhall, PCC

"It is estimated that on average we lose 10-30% of every day to ego-driven drama. That’s between five weeks to four months every year; that’s between seven and 21 years of an adult lifetime. What could be done with that time instead? And more importantly how can we minimize—if not eliminate—this waste of time and energy?"

The approaching year is an EXCELLENT time for a coaching tune up! Have you reached out to your coach lately?

I offer a full and half-day tune up for existing clients. Your coach may offer something similar. Longer year end sessions allow you to review:
  1. What have I learned this year?
  2. What can I celebrate?
  3. What learning can I take with me into the next year?
  4. What are my three focal points for next year?
  5. What goals support those focal points?
  6. What parts of me need to be engaged to support my success?

Those of us who are vehicle owners want to make sure our cars will get us through the winter or dog days of summer. Unfortunately, the average person rarely schedules the inspection or gets the tune-up. Service is called when the unthinkable happens: a total breakdown!
